This is how the website will look like if SOPA and PIPA will be signed

Two bills are being debated at the US Senate and at the White House: the "Protect IP Act" (PIPA) and the "Stop Online Piracy Act" (SOPA). If these bills become laws, many websites will disappear from the Internet.

For all the 18th of January all the webistes and services provided by Hipatia have been obscured. A blackout for freedom. Through this initiative, shared by many people and organizations everywhere in the world, we want to show you concretely what will happen if these bills will be approved. The freedom of speech is in serious danger:

• web services will be forced to monitor the links submitted by the users and the files they upload and share in the Internet
• the US Government will have the power of censoring the web, forcing the authors of the websites to delete their webpages with the excuse of copyright infrangment, without the need of a proper trial.
• the base structure of Internet will be changed, undermining completely the security of the web.

Despite the opposition by political parties of all positions, of scientists, security experts and the organizations for the fundamental human rights, these bills are moving quickly through Congress, thanks to the lobby of the discographic and cinematographic majors.
These laws will have serious repercussions on the fundamental freedom of speech, and draw a veil of silence over the Internet, with catastrophic effects all over the world, blocking the progress of the human kind!
